Self-improvement starts with your mind and body.
When it comes to self-improvement and wellness, the first book to go to is none other than MEET MASLOW, by Landon T. Smith.
Q. Who should read the book?
A. Everyone!
Q. Why?
A. Because this little book will help you connect so many dots and answer so many questions about your life. It’ll set you on a path to solving problems – some of which you didn’t even know you had.
Background
For starters, the book is based on the work of one of the most famous psychologists, Abraham Maslow. In a nutshell, the book simplifies the understanding of human life. It categorizes human needs on a pyramid known as the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs from bottom to top as follows:
- Physiological needs.
- Safety and Security.
- Love and Belonging.
- Self-Esteem.
- Self-Actualization.
Smith discusses these needs individually as they apply to all human beings. He shows the path to self-improvement from the bottom (physiological) to the top (self-actualization) of the pyramid.
Like Maslow, his conclusions are based on study and important assumptions about humans. These assumptions include:
- Genetically, we’re are all so close as to belong to the same species. This makes our needs and behavior predictable to a great degree.
- We’re not all identical twins. We’re so different in our individual nature and nurture as to have different needs at different times in our lives.
F.Y.I
Nature = What we’re born with.
Nurture = What we’re born into.
Beginning
The beginning of the book establishes that the bottom line for all of us is survival – of ourselves and fellow human beings. It stresses that our survival depends on our fitness – health and wellness. In turn, one factor that determines fitness is our nature – the kind of body you’re given by your creator (your size, weight, immune system, etc.). The other factor is our nurture – what you do with, and to, your body (exercise, diet, learning, etc.).
The book also says that you as a human being must be able to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else – yes, including your children.
Last, but not least, Smith indicates that for self-improvement, your mind and body must be seen to have the circular chicken and egg relationship, and both require the right nourishment.
Middle
Beyond basic survival, there are mid-level needs that are met depending on our priorities, stage of life and individual circumstances.
My understanding is that you should live your life the best way you know how. Set goals based on your circumstances, and don’t worry too much about how your friends and neighbors live their lives.
…don’t worry too much about how your friends and neighbors live their lives.
Everything you do should come from within you. The world doesn’t know you or even care as much as you might think.
While still on the “World”, the book tells you why and how you should get out of toxic relationships – romantic or just friendships.
End
To sum up, the book gives an evaluation for you to decide where you are in the hierarchy pyramid. To get it right, you must be brutally honest with yourself. Only then will you be able to place yourself in the right place. And only then will you know what to do next to move a step closer to self-actualization.

Hello finershape.com owner, Good work!
Hi are using WordPress for your blog platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up my own. Do you need any html coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!
This design is steller! You obviously know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
Nice read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch! “A human being has a natural desire to have more of a good thing than he needs.” by Mark Twain.
